The Health Insurance Portability & Accountability Act (HIPAA) requires Department of Health and Human Services (HSS) to ensure standardization of electronic patient data, assign unique health identifiers to patients and others, and implement security standards to protect the confidentiality and integrity of all "individual identifiable health information". HIPPA affects health care organizations such as- health care providers,
- health plans,
- public health authorities,
- health care clearinghouses,
- self-ensured employers,
- life insurers,
- information systems vendors,
- various service organizations and
- universities.
The HIPPA Final Security Rule provides high-level information security guidance. It requires health care providers and other entities to be compliant by April 2005.
