Email encryption in the cloud
Secure email with Microsoft 365 and Google Workspace
Operate Z1 SecureMail Gateway in the cloud or on-premise
Z1 solutions can be operated in the cloud or used with cloud-based services such as Microsoft 365 (formerly Office 365) or Google Workspace (formerly G Suite). Z1 SecureMail Gateway for email encryption and Z1 SecureHub for secure exchange of even large files are available directly from the Azure Marketplace.
Don’t forget email encryption when moving mail to the cloud
While many companies look to European data centers for security reasons when choosing a cloud provider for their email infrastructure, they often ignore the fact that email is transported through networks outside the cloud and is insecure without encryption.
Regardless of where you operate your email infrastructure, you can only protect your communication if you encrypt the content. Your business emails are always at risk of being intercepted during transmission. Cybercriminals, industrial spies, or intelligence agencies can read internal company communications without being detected and automatically evaluate them via Big Data analytics. In addition, the EU General Data Protection Regulation (GDPR), which prescribes the protection of personal data during email transmission, still applies to email infrastructures in the cloud.
It is, therefore, good to know that Zertificon’s encryption solutions are cloud-ready. The encryption standards S/MIME and OpenPGP can easily be used in the cloud with Z1 SecureMail Gateway. Zertificon also offers an automated cloud solution that uses passwords instead of certificates. Many of our customers already use our Z1 encryption solutions in the cloud or in hybrid environments.
Email encryption with Microsoft 365 (formerly Office 365)
Zertificon’s Z1 SecureMail Gateway can be smoothly integrated with Microsoft 365 or Office 365. It easily brings S/MIME and OpenPGP into the cloud. Z1 SecureMail Gateway for enterprise use conveniently replaces the existing client-based M365 S/MIME functionality and effortlessly enables centralized control. Microsoft’s own enterprise message encryption packages can be replaced with the useful Z1 SecureMail functionality for keyless encryption with private individuals. This is particularly advisable in terms of maintaining data sovereignty and GDPR compliance. Microsoft is subject to the Cloud Act of 2018. It would have to hand over data stored on servers operated by US companies to US authorities upon request, even if the servers are operated in Europe. Moreover, Z1 SecureMail encryption is suitable for all communication as it does not depend on whether the communication partner uses M365. For integration with Microsoft 365, it does not matter whether you also run the gateway in the cloud or on-premise. Even hybrid scenarios, where only a few mailboxes are initially moved to the cloud, are also supported with Z1 SecureMail Gateway.
M365: Email encryption with anti-spam and anti-virus through Exchange Online Protection (EoP)
Mail routing with Microsoft 365 can be demanding: different connectors need to be served, and ports are closed for security reasons. This makes the integration of anti-virus and anti-spam products very problematic.
Microsoft’s own Exchange Online Protection (EoP) solution is a complete anti-spam and anti-virus solution part of many Microsoft 365 packages. So while solutions that combine email encryption with anti-spam and anti-virus can be challenging, Z1 SecureMail Gateway works smoothly with EoP. Z1 SecureMail Gateway is already widely used by our customers with EoP to protect against viruses, spyware, ransomware, and spam.
Email encryption with Google Workspace (formerly G Suite)
Z1 SecureMail Gateway is an out-of-the-box solution that works with any Google Workspace package. Unlike Google’s S/MIME feature, with Z1 SecureMail Gateway, your private keys remain under your control and do not need to be shared with Google.
In addition, you get all the benefits of Z1 SecureMail Gateway for email encryption and digital signatures, such as centralized enforcement of compliance policies and automated certificate management, including search and validation of your communication partners’ certificates. The Z1 SecureMail function is also available for spontaneous encrypted email exchange with people without encryption certificates in conjunction with Google Workspace. Here, too, data sovereignty remains with you, as your private keys are not transferred to Google.
With the Google Workspace integration, we offer you a secure, convenient, efficient and compliant encryption solution in the cloud as an alternative to Microsoft 365.
