AS4 communication in the German rail power network
Compliant and reliable AS4 communication with Z1 Energy
As of July 1, 2025, the AS4 protocol has been mandatory for all data exchange in rail power network communication (“Bahnstromnetzkommunikation”). All market participants in the rail power network had to switch to the AS4 protocol by that date. With Z1 Energy, this changeover is easy, secure, and compliant with official regulations.
The basis for the changeover is the communication policy about the exchange of XML messages in the traction power network (“Informationen zum Austausch von XML-Nachrichten im Bahnstromnetz”). The goal is to enable standardized, future-proof data exchange for communication in the rail traction power network.What is rail power?
Rail power is a special form of energy used to power electric trains – in Germany, it operates at 16.7 hertz instead of the 50 hertz used by the public power grid. Operated by DB Energie, the traction current network is separate from the normal power grid and supplies around 7,900 km of railway lines directly with electricity. Decoupling from the general grid enables a stable, independent power supply that meets the special requirements of rail transport.Rail traction power network communication with Z1 Energy

Z1 Energy supports rail power network communication for compliant data transmission – in accordance with the specifications of the Federal Network Agency and DB Energie GmbH. The solution is ideal for all market participants who take part in structured electronic data exchange in the rail traction power network without having to worry about the technical details of the transmission themselves. Z1 Energy already complies with the current transmission guidelines and will fully implement the new requirements coming into effect in 2026 on time.
Certificate management and procurement for AS4 certificates
Z1 Energy customers obtain AS4 certificate triples directly via Zertificon. We offer certificates from the registered Sub-CA DARZ.CA. In addition to procurement, Z1 Energy also handles the management, search, and storage of your own and your market partners’ AS4 certificates.
Identification of rail power network market partners
In rail power network communication, BDEW code numbers or rail power code numbers are used to uniquely identify market partners. Z1 Energy supports all code numbers used for identification.
